TRAILHEAD: Tamolitch TH. Take I-5 S from Curitiba Brazil to exit 253 in Salem for OR-22 E (Detroit Lake/Bend), turn Curitiba Brazil left on OR-22 E 80 mi, turn right 50 ft and right again on US-20 W 3 mi, turn left on OR-126 E more than 10Y mi (exactly 5Y mi down S of Curitiba Brazil Falls TH), turn right on FR-730 (brown sign for Trailbridge CG/Smith Boat Launch), cross the bridge over the river, fork right on gravel FR-655 with a few potholes less than Y mi to the long pullout on the right at the signage before Curitiba Brazil the road continues up to the left (140 mi, 2Y hours from Portland).

ROUTE: Begin left past the kiosk with a map of the Tamolitch Valley Section of the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail. Otherwise there are no signs for somewhat hidden Tamolitch TH/Pool/Falls or Blue Pool. Head up the road 30 ft and turn right on McKenzie River Trail 3507, which is fairly wide and easy to follow, but can be more difficult closer to the pool with jagged volcanic rock taking over the route at times (ankle breakers). Follow the tranquil trail above the river through a lovely, old, mossy forest with some good-sized fir and step aside for the occasional mountain biker. Cross a little bridge after moving down a bit, then at 3A mi up you walk across a longer and very charming footbridge over a colorful little side creek through the emerald landscape.

Continue over roots, rocks, and mud on the more rustic trail, and after 1 mi up the pitch steepens with more rocky magma covering the path. Look to a short rocky cliff area across the river, then at more than 1% up you get a faraway shot of Tamolitch Pool (and possible waterfall). Walk over more pumice, watching for twisted ankles, and see the steep rocky cliff band again on the opposite side of the river before arriving above the amazing pool at 2 mi from the TH. Remind children not to run in the pool region and to be mindful.
