The Long Beach Oceanfront Trail Is A Paved Walking And Biking Path Along The San Pedro Bay Coastline In Long Beach. Long Beach Is The Southernmost Coastal City In Los Angeles County. Long Beach City Beach, Which Fronts The Path, Extends Four Miles From The Long Beach Harbor To The Alamitos Peninsula And San Gabriel River On The Orange County Line.

This Hike Begins At The Mouth Of The Los Angeles River In Queensway Bay By Shoreline Village, A Tourist Attraction With Shops And Restaurants. The Path Follows The Coastline Along Long Beach City Beach To Belmont Pier. En Route Is Bluff Park, An Elevated Grassy Park Above The Wide, Sandy Beach Overlooking San Pedro Bay. Bluff Park Backs The Beach And Runs Parallel To Ocean Boulevard. Offshore From The Beach And Path Are Four Artificial Tropical Islands With Postcard-Perfect Fronts. They Are Actually Landscaped Oil Drilling Platforms.

Belmont Pier The Destination For The Hike Is A 1,600-Foot T-Shaped Pier That Bisects Long Beach City Beach. The Pier Was Built In 1968 At The Foot Of 39th Place In Belmont Shore, A Charming Seaside Community Filled With Shops And Eateries. After Belmont Pier, The Coastal Path Continues To Alamitos Bay Hike 58. Freeway) South To Its End. Follow The Downtown Long Beach/Aquarium Signs Onto Shoreline Drive. Turn Right And Curve Into The Huge Long Beach Marina Parking Lot And Park Near Shoreline Village. A Parking Fee Is Required.

The Hike

Follow The Paved Walking And Biking Path Along The Downtown Shoreline Marina To Shoreline Village. Curve Left Along The Narrow, Palm-Lined Breakwater In Queensway Bay. Pass The Queen Mary, An 81,000-Ton Luxury Liner Built In 1934 And Retired After More Than A Thousand Trans Atlantic Voyages. Continue Past Several Short Fishing And Overlook Piers For A Half Mile To The Breakwater’S End, Across From Island Grissom.

Return To Shoreline Village And Continue 0.5 Miles East, Passing The Marina Boat Slips. The Path Curves Away From The Small Marina To The Back End Of Wide, Sandy Long Beach City Beach. Continue East, Curving Past The Historic Lifeguard Station Built In 1938, To A Parking Lot Where Junipero Avenue Winds Down The Bluffs To The Shoreline Parking Lot.

Climb Up The Stairs To Grassy Bluff Park, Just West Of Lindero Avenue. Follow The Tree-Filled Park 0.8 Miles On The 40-Foot Bluffs To Loma Avenue. Descend The Stairway To The Beach And Follow The Coastline, Rising To The Base Of Belmont Pier Off Of 39th Place In Belmont Shore. This Is The Turn-Around Spot.

For An Optional Side Trip, The Belmont Pier Extends 1,600 Feet Into The Bay. The Long Pier Is A Popular Site For Fishing And Strolling.

The Ocean Front Trail Continues Along The Sandy Coastline For Another Two Miles To Alamitos Peninsula Hike 58.

Long Beach City Beach Stretches Over 4 Miles, From The Port Of Long Beach To The Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel At The Orange County Border. This Hike Begins At Belmont Pier Near The Middle Of The Coastal Beach. The 1,620-Foot- Long, T-Shaped Pier Extends From The Foot Of 39th Place. The Hike Explores Both Shores Of The Narrow Alamitos Peninsula To The Mouth Of Alamitos Bay. The Route Follows The Seaside Walk (A Wooden Boardwalk) And Bay Shore Walk (A Paved Walkway) Along The San Pedro Bay Coastline. From Belmont Pier, The Hike Can Be Extended West On The Long Beach Oceanfront Trail Hike 57.

To The Trailhead

From The Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) In Seal Beach, Head North To 2nd Street In Long Beach. Turn Left And Drive 1.7 Miles To Livingston Drive. Veer Left And Continue 0.4 Miles To Termino Avenue. Turn Left And Drive 2 Blocks Into The Beachfront Parking Lot On The East Side Of Belmont Pier, Adjacent To The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

The Hike

From Belmont Pier, Head East On The Paved Boardwalk Along Either Side Of The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Both Routes Merge A Short Distance Ahead. A Bike Path Also Winds East Through The Wide Sandy Beach. At Just Over A Half Mile, Pass A Row Of Palm Trees By Granada Avenue. Offshore, The Scenic, Tropical-Looking Islands With Palm Trees Are Actually Disguised Oil Platforms.

At One Mile, The Paved Bike Path Joins The Walking Path At The Head Of Alamitos Peninsula By 54th Place. Walk On The Sandy Strand To The Seaside

Walk, A Wooden Boardwalk That Begins At 55th Place. Continue 0.7 Miles To The End Of The Oceanfront Boardwalk At 69th Place. Return To The Sand, Reaching Alamitos Park And The Alamitos Bay Channel By 72nd Place. Walk To The Right, Passing The Lifeguard Station To The Jetty. Atop The Jetty, A Rock- Lined Path, Frequented By Fisherman, Extends Out To Sea. Return To The Small Grassy Park. A Paved Path Follows The Edge Of Alamitos Bay, Ending At The Marina. Return To Ocean Boulevard And Walk West To 65th Place. At The North End Of The Street, Pick Up The Bay Shore Walk, A Paved Public Walkway. Follow The Path 0.4 Miles Along The Bay To The End At 55th Place. Cross Ocean Boulevard, Completing The Loop. Retrace Your Steps To Belmont Pier. To Extend Your Hike Along The Oceanfront, Continue West To Bluff Park And The Long Beach Oceanfront Trail Hike 57.
