II. History of Gila Bend

Gila Bend was founded in 1877 as a stagecoach stop on the route between Tucson and Yuma. The town was named after the nearby Gila River. In the early 1900s, Gila Bend became a popular tourist destination due to its hot springs. The town also served as a shipping point for copper and other minerals from the surrounding area. In 1942, Gila Bend was the site of a Japanese internment camp. The camp was closed in 1946, and the land was returned to the Gila River Indian Community. Today, Gila Bend is a small town with a population of around 6,000 people. The town is home to a number of businesses, including a hospital, a school, and a number of shops and restaurants. Gila Bend is also a popular tourist destination, due to its proximity to the Sonoran Desert and its many hiking and biking trails.
