II. History of Gila Bend
Gila Bend was founded in 1877 as a stagecoach stop on the route between Tucson and Yuma. The town was named after the nearby Gila River. In the early 1900s, Gila Bend became a popular tourist destination due to its hot springs. The town also served as a shipping point for copper and other minerals from the surrounding area. In 1942, Gila Bend was the site of a Japanese internment camp. The camp was closed in 1946, and the land was returned to the Gila River Indian Community.
