The history of La Laguna dates back to the 16th century, when it was founded by Spanish missionaries. The city was originally named “La Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de la Laguna”, but was later shortened to simply “La Laguna”.

La Laguna was an important center of trade and commerce during the colonial period, and it continued to grow after Mexico gained independence in 1821. The city was officially declared a municipality in 1825.
