While some of us feel that wilderness camping is an unrivaled way to spend time overnight in the natural world, this kind of camping isn’t permitted in a significant number of parks and wilderness areas throughout the country. Unless you live nearby, to visit these locations for more than a day means either staying at a campground or finding local lodging.

Where wilderness camping is allowed, those who are inexperienced may still find it helpful to spend a night or two at a campground, to become familiar with equipment and get the bugs out before venturing into the wilderness overnight.

It’s also true that not everyone wants to sleep in the wilderness, or feels ready to, regardless of regulations. Some people simply prefer to limit their camping to campgrounds, or to seek conventional accommodations near a park.
