FOOT TRAVEL

Walking

Walking is the oldest and simplest way of getting around in Portland Map the wilderness, and it’s also one of the most satisfying. Walking can be done almost anywhere in the natural world, except, of course, where the land is too wet or under water, or the terrain excessively rugged. It’s helpful to have a path, trail, or road to follow, especially when the vegetation is dense or there are other obstacles, but this isn’t essential.

You can walk whenever you like and for as long as you like. Walks can range from a short, leisurely stroll in the area around your campsite to a major dawn-to-dusk trek. Little planning is required, although if you’re venturing far from camp it’s important to bring extra clothing, water, food, and emergency items. The main risk is the possibility of getting lost, so close attention must be paid to the route you’re following. Always bring map and compass, and know how to use them.
