Although the hotel has 274 suites, this isn’t another Mexican behemoth offering a sterilised version of local culture; instead, Mexican and Mayan culture, as well as architecture, are very much respected here.
It’s hard to pinpoint the best room (all are breathtaking), but if you want to blow the budget, opt for the Penthouse suite, with its amazing views, an enormous outdoor terrace (perfect for intimate dinners) and a plunge pool.
Breakfast is a limitless buffet fit for a Mayan king – highlights include a bubbling cauldron of hot chocolate, traditional quesadillas, fresh honey from the honeycomb onto your pancakes and Bloody Marys. Roll to one of the two huge infinity pools, or one of the two beaches, and simply ‘be’. This place is a hit of sunshine and escapism. What more could you want?
