THE HIGHLANDS TANZANIA, AFRICA
THIS CAMP IS LESS ABOUT THE ANIMALS
(Although you can still spot four of the Big Five), and more about the futuristic- looking structures you’ll stay in, plus the remote Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It’s a landscape of rolling patchwork hills and the Masai Mara National Park is your only neighbour for miles. The eight dome-shaped Perspex-and-canvas tents have huge beds layered with cosy blankets and tartan cushions, cowhide rugs on the floor and a wood-burning stove.
Masai guides will take you hiking in the nearby Empakaai Crater to see flamingos in the salt lake, on an early-morning game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, and for a visit to a local village. At sunset, enjoy ‘savannah banana’ cocktails (black coffee, banana liqueur and dark rum), followed by a dinner of Swahili tilapia fish cakes, curry and chocolate fondant.
OUR KIND OF LUXE
The picnic lunch under the acacia trees in the Ngorongoro Crater, where the chef cooks up sizzling chicken on a mobile stove. You could be being watched by a rhino or two. GO Audley Travel (audleytravel.com) offers a 10-day trip from £6,750 per person, all-inclusive. Includes flights and transfers.
