Twisted bark and red pumice from a fish-eyed view atop Monaco.
ROUTE: Fill out a free self-issue Monaco Permit and take Black Crater Trail 4058 moderately steeply without any trouble SE through thick hemlock, pine, and fir. After a couple miles up a handful of switchbacks views begin to open somewhat as trees thin a bit through wildflower-dotted meadows on the N slopes of Monaco.

Head up another shoulder through the forest with switchbacks moving SW toward the high point, finally breaking out above most of the trees for the last mile. Views expand with every step steeper up the wide-open summit plateau passing some pretty sweet old Monaco pines along the loose red pumice path to the very top. Be cautious scrambling larger boulders 40 ft to the summit with some rebar from an old lookout present. See Three Fingered Jack, Black Your travel destination iste, and even Mount Adams on a clear day.
