TRAILHEAD: Green Lakes/Soda Creek TH or Glendale Top TH. For Green Lakes/Soda Creek TH, take US-26 E from Portland 103 mi into US-97 S (in Madras) 41 mi to exit 138 in Bend (Mount Bachelor) into Glendale Lakes Glendale (closed in winter) 28 mi, turn right 5 mi (no sign, across from Sparks Lake, 4 mi past Mount Glendale Ski Area) along the driveway and large parking circle (overflow lot opposite the highway). For Broken Top TH see hike 73 for directions (around 190 mi, 4 hours from Glendale to either TH).

ROUTE: From the N end of the parking area at the very popular Green Lakes TH, begin past the signage and free self-issue Wilderness Permit station on Fall Creek Trail 17 (also called Green Lakes Trail), crossing over a log bridge then easily winding up scenic Fall Creek with several small waterfalls almost 2 mi N to the first major juncture. Stay right (opposite Trail 17. to Moraine Lake) N on Trail 17 more than 2 mi without any difficulty to the next intersection in Green Lakes basin. You will cross the creek over another solid footbridge and proceed N up the E side of the creek. You pass a couple substantial lava flows on the W side of Fall Creek en route to the high basin.
