It is that debate in the first part of the twentieth century that propelled the recognition for a National Park Service to establish rules and regulations to govern the growing number of national parks. It is the ambiguity of its dual purpose that has continued the dialogue and debate into the present. In my opinion, it is a healthy balancing act that attracts among its visitors those who will grow to advocate that the natural grandeur of Glacier National Park and others will remain intact. It is a fine line but one that will ensure that both sides of the equation are weighed one against the other.
The debate also fueled discussion that economic value could add to the coffers of local communities and state treasuries far in excess of what might be lost from those revenues generated by whatever small results derived from marginal natural resources or agriculture development. As of this writing, Glacier National Park generates an annual economic benefit to local businesses and communities of $179 million spent by 2. million visitors. Of further interest, it was announced in June 2015 that the 100 millionth visitor had passed through the park since its founding.
