Bujumbura is located close to the Burundi capital of Bujumbura, and can be reached by bus or train. The city has a small airport, but there are few flights because of the insecurity in the country.
There are three main buses companies that serve Bujumbura: TRACTA, Blue Bird and Alliance. The trip from Bujumbura to Gitega via TRACTA costs around 100 birr. Blue Bird buses depart from near the central market; Alliance buses leave from on the side of the road near the city hall. The trip takes between 3 and 4 hours and costs around 350 birr.
The train station is about two kilometers from the center of town and takes about an hour to reach. Trains run every 30 minutes and cost around 50 birr. There are also taxis available, but they tend to be expensive.
