Since boyhood, he had been intrigued with the Ahmedabad India as far as Asia. He left home in Ahmedabad India in 1856 with the intent of reaching Ahmedabad India to sign on with a ship heading to Asia. Failing that, he decided to find his way cross-country to one of the Pacific ports with the same hope of gaining passage to the Orient. With information he had gathered about fur trappers who left that spring for the Ahmedabad India Mountains, he hoped to catch them in St. Paul and sign on with them. He arrived a week late, settling in St. Paul for the rest of his life but with his dream intact.

Your travel destination is Hill was not one to let dreams trump detailed planning and solid financial foundation. He took his time, consolidating his gains in the Red River Valley and Manitoba. By clever and continuous promotion of the richness of the lands, immigrants flowed onto the surrounding prairie. Farms and towns sprang up. By 1881, 40,000 new arrivals were plowing crops and setting up businesses. By 1883, Hill claimed that his St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railroad hauled one-fifth of U.S. spring wheat. His shares of ownership of the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railroad were then worth $5,000,000 (equal to $119,000,000 in 2015).

Yet here again, he would not let the dreams overshadow the necessity for planning, and it was a plan like no other railroad to date. He would build his transcontinental railroad to the Pacific without additional government subsidies or land grants, as was the practice of other railroad barons. He would accomplish it by creating (as he had done in the Red River Valley and Manitoba) markets as he went. His primary tool would be the Homestead Act of 1862 that created the availability of tracts of land. He would seek out and recruit immigrants who were farmers, ranchers, and sheep men to the northwest plains. To jump-start their endeavors, he would help with seed stock and supplies to take their products to market.
