SHORT-TERM WORK

Traveling for long periods of time can get expensive, so picking up odd jobs for a few weeks at a time is a good way to subsidize the next leg of a trip. Another option is to work several hours a day at a hostel in exchange for free or discounted room and/or board. Most often, these short-term jobs are found by word of mouth, or simply by talking to the owner of a hostel or restaurant. Due to the high turn over in the tourism industry, places are often eager for help.

The availability and legality of temporary work vary widely across Europe. If you are interested in working your way through the continent, we recommend picking up Let’s Go city and country guides. These books contain thorough information on local work opportunities at specific hostels and restaurants, and are updated yearly.
