The HMA displays works from its permanent collection on a rotating basis, organizes temporary shows of local and regional art, and hosts traveling exhibitions. The permanent collection totals approximately 1.800 objects, with the focus being on 20th-century American graphic art and photography.

The Department of Art and Art History directs and operates two gallery spaces on campus. The galleries play host to a yearly series of exhibitions of the work of local, regional, and national artists. In addition, the galleries are used for annual student exhibitions, senior student solo shows, and faculty exhibitions. The Union Grove Gallery & Meeting Hall, a one-room church built in the Greek Revival-style (circa 1840), was donated to the University in 1973 and was renovated by UAH students in 1974. A second gallery area is located in the UAH University Center.
