The Hastian-Discovery Loop In Lower Franklin Canyon Park Winds Through The 105-Acre Franklin Canyon Ranch Site. The Ranch Is Nestled In A Deep Valley In The Mountains Above Beverly Hills. These Two Trails Form A Loop Through The Canyon Bottom Woodlands To The Chaparral-Covered Slopes.

The Hastian Trail Climbs The East Wall Of Franklin Canyon On A Fire Road To Spectacular Vistas Of The Lower Canyon, Franklin Canyon Reservoir, West Los Angeles, And The Pacific Ocean. The Discovery Trail Follows The Canyon Floor Through Groves Of Sycamore, Oak, And Black Walnut Trees.

To The Trailhead

From Sunset Boulevard In Beverly Hills, Head North On Beverly Drive For 0.6 Miles. At The Fork, Go Left On Beverly Drive, Where The Main Road Continues As Coldwater Canyon Drive. Continue 0.8 Miles And Curve Right Onto Franklin Canyon Drive. Drive 1.1 Mile To Lake Drive. Turn Right And Drive 0.3 Miles To The Posted Trailhead Parking Area On The Left.

From The Ventura Freeway/Highway 101 In Studio City, Exit On Coldwater Canyon Drive. Head 2.5 Miles South To The Intersection With Mulholland Drive By The Coldwater Canyon Park/Treepeople Park. Make A 90-Degree Right Turn Onto Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue 1.4 Miles To Lake Drive. Curve Left Onto Lake Drive, And Go 0.3 Miles To The Posted Trailhead Parking Area On The Left.

The Hike

Take The Posted Hastian Trail (A Fire Road) Past The Trail Gate. Traverse The Hillside High Above Lake Drive. The Easy Uphill Grade Climbs The East Canyon Wall. The Trail Curves Left And Makes A Wide Sweeping Loop Around A Side Canyon, Steadily Gaining Elevation To An Overlook Of Lower Franklin Canyon, Santa Monica, Westwood, And The Ocean. The Main Trail Curves Left And Continues Up To The Ridge, Leaving Franklin Canyon And The Park. Take The Narrow Footpath On The Right By The Wood Pole And Wind Down The Hill. The Serpentine Path Exits The Hillside At 2.3 Miles On A Broad Grassy Lawn By The Old Doheny Ranch House, A Spanish-Style Stucco House Built In 1935. Cross Lake Road To The Discovery Trail. Curve Right And Head North, Parallel To The Park Road Along The Lower West Canyon Slope. The Forested Trail Joins Lake Drive 50 Yards South Of The Trailhead. Return To The Left. I

Franklin Canyon Park Is A 605-Acre Wildlife Refuge And Tranquil Retreat Just Minutes From Beverly Hills. The Pastoral Open Space Of Upper Franklin Canyon Centers Around Franklin Canyon Lake, A Beautiful, 9-Acre Manmade Lake Which Is Part Of The California Migratory Bird Route. The Famous Opening Sequence Of The Andy Griffith Show Was Filmed On The Trail Near The Lake.

This Hike Circles The Serene Lake Under Sycamores And Oaks. To The East Of The Lake Is Heavenly Pond. Circling The Pond Is The Wodoc Nature Trail, A Wheelchair-Accessible Path Through A Natural Riparian Habitat.

Douglas Outdoor Classroom And Sooky Goldman Nature Center Parking Lot On The Right.

Franklin Canyon Lake Loop

Upper Franklin Canyon Park

Follow The Park Road To The Left (South) For 30 Yards To A Road On The Right By The Maintenance Shop. To Hike Counter-Clockwise Around Franklin Canyon Lake, Curve Right And Descend Steps On The Left To The Trail. Pass The Surge Basin To A Trail Split. Both Paths Parallel The Lake And Merge At A Picnic Area By The Park Road. (The Left Fork Skirts The Edge Of The Lake.) Follow The Road To The Left 50 Yards To The Wodoc Nature Trail At Heavenly Pond. Loop Around The Serene Pond On The Paved Path. Back At The Road, Continue South Above The Lake, And Cross The Dam At The End Of The Lake. After Crossing, Descend Steps On The Chernoff Trail, And Follow The East Banks Of The Lake Through A Shady Woodland And A Picnic Area. At The Franklin Lake Spillway, Curve Right To The Road, And Bear Left 100 Yards, Returning To The Parking Area. (If The Spillway Is Dry, You May Cross Over It To Complete The Loop And Return To The Right.)
