A Brief History of Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is a city located on the Atlantic coast of Brevard County, Florida, United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a population of 30,704. Cocoa Beach is part of the Melbourne–Titusville–Palm Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 1,965,321 as of 2006.
The first known European settler in Cocoa Beach was William Richardson Cockerell who arrived in 1855. Cocoa Beach became an incorporated municipality on December 6, 1955. In 1956, local entrepreneur Roy Chapman saw potential in building a resort along the oceanfront and convinced Cocoa Beach officials to change the town’s name from Kite Beach to Cocoa Beach.
Chapman invested $150,000 in developing the town and built what would become one of the most popular resorts on the east coast-the Palm Inn. He also started construction on what became known as Cocoa Beach Pier which stretched for more than 1 mile (1.6 km) into the Atlantic Ocean nearly midway between Palm Inn and Miami International.
