The Location of Bern
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is located in the Bernese Oberland. The city is nestled in a valley between the Bernese Alps to the north and the Jura Mountains to the south. The municipality has an area of 193.1 km2 (74 sq mi).
The city is divided into four parts: Altbau (Old Town), Neubau (New Town), Thal (Valley) and Bärengraben. Altbau is located on a terrace above the river Aare and was built mainly in the 14th century. The New Town was built on a plain below the terrace in the 18th century and is composed of neoclassical buildings. The Thal is a narrow valley that runs from north to south between the mountains and the Aare. It was used for agriculture until 1963 and has since been redeveloped as a residential area. The Bärengraben is a stream that flows through the center of town.
Bern has numerous parks and gardens including Garten der Nation (Garden of Nations), Schlossbergpark, Botanischer Garten Zürich, Grosser Garten Bern, Tier park, Wilenpark and the Old Botanic Garden. The main park is the Grosser Garten Bern, which features a 32 hectare (79 acre) English landscape garden and is surrounded by ornamental lakes. The botanical garden was founded in 1631 to grow medicinal plants under the authority of Bern’s guild of apothecaries. Like many other Swiss cities, Bern has numerous museums including: Museum Frutigen, Kunstmuseum Carouge, Kunsthalle Zürich, Nationalmuseum Zürich and Swiss National Museum which is located on a hill overlooking the city.
